Strategy's Bitcoin Losses Exceed $13 Billion
Strategy's unrealized Bitcoin losses have surpassed $13 billion, exceeding the market value of many cryptocurrencies.
Strategy is facing one of the largest unrealized losses ever reported by a publicly traded company. The firm's paper loss on its Bitcoin holdings has now exceeded $13 billion, surpassing the total market capitalization of several well-known cryptocurrencies.
The company currently owns around 844,000 BTC, acquired at an average purchase price of approximately $75,600 per coin. With Bitcoin trading near $60,000, the position is now worth more than $13 billion less than its acquisition cost. Under mark-to-market accounting rules, these unrealized losses are reflected directly in the company's financial statements, significantly impacting its quarterly results.
The scale of the loss is remarkable. Strategy's paper loss is larger than the entire market capitalization of Dogecoin, which is valued at roughly $11.5–12.7 billion. However, it remains below the valuation of Hyperliquid's HYPE token, whose market capitalization stands at approximately $18 billion. HYPE is currently the world's ninth-largest cryptocurrency and is widely regarded by analysts as one of the industry's most promising projects.
Strategy's unrealized loss also exceeds the market value of several major crypto assets, including Monero, Cardano, Chainlink, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, BlackRock BUIDL, Uniswap, Near Protocol, and Aster.
Since 2020, the company, led by Michael Saylor, has consistently raised capital to finance additional Bitcoin purchases. As a result, Strategy has evolved into a business whose financial performance is closely tied to the price movements of the world's largest cryptocurrency.
Supporters of this strategy argue that the current losses are only temporary and could turn into substantial gains during the next bull market. However, Strategy's situation also highlights the risks of concentrating such a significant amount of capital in a single, highly volatile asset instead of investing in business expansion or maintaining a more diversified portfolio.
Critics, meanwhile, warn that continued declines in Bitcoin's price could eventually force Strategy to liquidate part of its holdings. Such a scenario could trigger a domino effect, increasing selling pressure across the market and accelerating price declines, potentially leading to even greater losses throughout the broader cryptocurrency sector.
