Senator Richard Blumenthal has once again taken aim at the cryptocurrency industry. The Connecticut Democrat wrote on X on Thursday that digital assets are “criminals’ favorite currency.”

The senator referred to the case of Lori Flowers, who fell victim to an international criminal organization. Flowers, a sales representative in the pharmaceutical industry, lost a significant portion of her savings in a multimillion-dollar scam in 2022.

Flowers shared her story during a Senate forum. She explained that the criminals used cryptocurrencies to transfer money quickly, and the transactions could not be reversed afterward.

Blumenthal hosted a meeting on Capitol Hill this week, where he argued that scams are becoming increasingly common because digital assets make it easier to launder stolen funds. He also warned that the CLARITY Act would weaken law enforcement by limiting the authority of state attorneys general.

The Republican-backed CLARITY Act is intended to establish a clearer regulatory framework for digital assets. However, some Democratic senators believe the bill lacks sufficiently strong ethical safeguards and fails to provide adequate consumer protection.

Elizabeth Warren, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, said the latest version of the bill contains major loopholes. Chris Van Hollen and Lisa Blunt Rochester have also come out against the legislation, arguing that it does not do enough to protect consumers.
