Russians Show Growing Interest in Cryptocurrency

More and more Russians are showing interest in cryptocurrencies, even though the number of actual owners remains relatively small. According to a study by Wyberu.ru and IT Smart Finance, 10% of Russian citizens are considering buying cryptocurrencies, while as many as 80% are familiar with the topic. Among people aged 25 to 50, only about 3–5% actually own digital assets.

For 60% of respondents, the biggest advantage of cryptocurrencies is the potential for high profits in a short period of time. Another 35% appreciate their independence from banks, and 30% value the ability to trade anytime, anywhere. However, the main concern remains the high volatility of crypto prices — 45% identified it as the greatest risk. The lack of clear regulations was the second major issue, discouraging nearly 80% of potential investors. Other concerns include hacking attacks, loss of wallet access, and fraud — mentioned by 19% of the 2,500 survey participants.

Currently, cryptocurrencies in Russia can only be legally purchased under a so-called “experimental legal framework” and only by selected “qualified investors.” Despite these restrictions, estimates cited by Cryptopolitan suggest that as many as 20 million Russians already hold digital assets worth more than $40 billion in total.

The Central Bank of Russia has announced plans to introduce comprehensive cryptocurrency regulations by 2026. There is also growing discussion about allowing banks to participate in the crypto market. Meanwhile, over 30% of Russian investors are taking advantage of Bitcoin’s recent price decline to buy more, and about 7% of Russians say they plan to use cryptocurrencies in the future.
