Franklin Templeton Invests in Crypto

Franklin Templeton has announced the creation of a dedicated cryptocurrency division, strengthening its presence in the digital assets market. As part of this move, the firm is acquiring 250 Digital, a company that originated from the venture capital fund CoinFund.

The new unit will operate under the name Franklin Crypto. Its day-to-day operations will be led by Christopher Perkins and Seth Ginns, both formerly associated with CoinFund. Overall supervision will be handled by Sandy Kaul, who heads innovation at the firm.

Franklin Templeton has been active in the cryptocurrency space since 2018. Until now, its focus has primarily been on passive investment products, such as a Bitcoin-based ETF and a tokenized money market fund on Binance. The new strategy signals a shift toward actively managed solutions aimed at large institutions, including pension funds and wealth managers.

The company’s actions reflect a broader trend among major financial institutions. Despite recent declines in cryptocurrency prices, more large firms are investing in blockchain-based infrastructure. Rather than focusing solely on short-term market fluctuations, they see this period as an opportunity to build capabilities and strengthen their position. In their view, blockchain technology has the potential to play a significant role in the future of the financial sector.
