Cardano Tests New Wallet Recovery System
Charles Hoskinson is testing a zero-knowledge wallet recovery system that protects users' seed phrases.
Charles Hoskinson has begun testing a new Cardano wallet recovery system based on zero-knowledge proofs. The solution is designed to let users regain access to their ADA and native Cardano tokens without revealing their 24-word recovery phrase.
The recovery mechanism relies on a smart contract that verifies wallet ownership through a cryptographic proof. Instead of exposing the recovery phrase, users only need to prove that they possess it. Once the verification is successful, the smart contract automatically transfers the funds from a preconfigured recovery pool.
The new approach aims to improve the security of self-custody wallets by eliminating the need to share sensitive recovery information. The entire process is handled directly on the Cardano blockchain, without involving any third parties.
Hoskinson noted that the project is still in its early stages of development. He also confirmed that further testing will continue in collaboration with Quantumplation, Sebastien Guillemot, and the Midnight development team.
The recovery system is built on Cardano's existing infrastructure, including smart contracts and its Extended UTxO architecture. This allows for predictable transaction execution while supporting advanced cryptographic techniques such as zero-knowledge proofs.
The project is focused exclusively on secure wallet recovery within the Cardano ecosystem and is not intended to become a universal standard for other blockchain networks.
The initiative reflects a broader industry trend of moving beyond traditional seed phrase-based recovery methods. Other blockchain projects are exploring alternatives such as multi-party computation (MPC), social recovery, hardware-based authentication, and biometric verification.
Despite ongoing uncertainty in the crypto market, Cardano continues to expand its ecosystem. Recent data points to a growing number of active addresses and increasing community engagement. Although the wallet recovery system remains experimental, it demonstrates Cardano's commitment to strengthening wallet security while preserving decentralization.
