Japan is testing another initiative that could help accelerate the adoption of stablecoins. Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Club and Hashport have launched a new program that allows users to convert loyalty points earned through payment cards into JPYC, a stablecoin pegged to the Japanese yen.

The service will be available to holders of Diners Club and Trust Club cards. Under the program, 2,500 Diners Club points or 4,000 Trust Club points can be exchanged for 1,000 JPYC. The converted funds will be accessible across several blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon, and Kaia.

The ability to exchange loyalty points for stablecoins could prove more significant than the details of the program itself. Loyalty points have long operated within closed reward systems, typically offering limited redemption options. Stablecoins, on the other hand, provide users with greater flexibility and broader access to blockchain-based financial ecosystems.

According to data provided by Hashport, loyalty points worth more than ¥2.8 trillion are issued in Japan every year. Even if only a small portion of these rewards is converted into stablecoins, it could boost interest in digital assets linked to traditional currencies.

The stablecoin market is currently growing faster than many other segments of the cryptocurrency industry. Increasingly, stablecoins are being viewed not only as tools for investors but also as practical solutions for everyday payments and money transfers. Initiatives like this highlight how the industry is seeking to bridge familiar financial services with blockchain technology.

The program launching in Japan is one of the first examples of loyalty points being used to fund stablecoin wallets. It signals that the line between traditional rewards programs and digital assets is gradually becoming more blurred.
