Mastercard Tests Card Settlements in RLUSD
Mastercard explores RLUSD stablecoin for faster, global card transaction settlements.
Mastercard is exploring the introduction of settlements based on the RLUSD stablecoin, which is tied to the XRP Ledger. This move could bridge the gap between the cryptocurrency ecosystem and one of the world’s largest payment networks.
The news surfaced on April 16 during a discussion shared by XRPL Commons. Christian Rau, Mastercard’s Executive Vice President for Digital Assets and Blockchain, confirmed that the company is working with Gemini to explore using RLUSD for card transaction settlements. The project could potentially launch in the first half of this year.
This initiative is part of Mastercard’s broader strategy to integrate stablecoins into its existing payment infrastructure. Rather than viewing them as a replacement for the current system, the company sees stablecoins as a complementary layer. Rau emphasized that stablecoins have entered the financial mainstream and can improve the flow of money, particularly in cross-border transactions.
Mastercard aims to leverage its massive scale as a key advantage. Its network includes approximately 150 million acceptance locations and 3.8 billion cards. Integrating stablecoins into such a vast system could accelerate their adoption far more effectively than solutions based solely on crypto wallets.
In practice, this means RLUSD could function as an additional settlement currency within the Mastercard network. According to the company, this approach combines the reliability of traditional payment systems with the innovative benefits of blockchain technology, such as faster settlements and more seamless global money movement.
The most concrete example of this collaboration is the project with Gemini. Mastercard is evaluating the possibility of settling card transactions on the platform using RLUSD. The company considers Gemini one of its key crypto partners in the United States and is aiming for a swift implementation of the solution.
