SBI Acquires Coinhako Exchange
SBI Holdings takes control of Singapore-based Coinhako, a crypto exchange serving over 400,000 customers.
Japanese financial group SBI Holdings has acquired a majority stake in Coinhako, a Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange. The transaction was completed on July 16 after receiving approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
SBI took control of Holdbuild Pte. Ltd., Coinhako’s parent company. The deal involved a capital injection into the company and the purchase of shares from existing investors. Its financial terms were not disclosed.
Following the completion of the transaction, Coinhako became a subsidiary of SBI Holdings. The exchange operates through Hako Technology under a Major Payment Institution licence issued by MAS.
The acquisition gives SBI access to Coinhako’s customer base of more than 400,000 users, as well as its operational infrastructure and regulatory expertise in Southeast Asia.
SBI President Yoshitaka Kitao announced plans to develop a global network of digital asset platforms. The network is intended to make cross-border investing easier by removing barriers associated with domestic markets and currencies. Kitao described Singapore as a key market due to its well-developed regulatory framework for digital assets.
Coinhako will become part of SBI’s broader digital finance division, which includes JPYSC, a stablecoin pegged to the Japanese yen. The group plans to expand its activities in tokenisation, stablecoins, blockchain-based finance and cross-border payments connecting Japan with Southeast Asia.
SBI previously signed an agreement to acquire the Japanese crypto exchange Bitbank. It has also partnered with Ondo Finance to explore the tokenisation of Japanese equities using JPYSC.
Coinhako co-founder and CEO Yusho Liu said the partnership would provide the exchange with institutional support and access to SBI’s financial ecosystem. The company intends to use these resources to further develop its digital services across the region.
The acquisition of Coinhako marks another step in SBI’s expansion across Asia’s digital asset market. Following its Bitbank agreement and partnership with Ondo Finance, the Japanese group is strengthening its presence in Singapore while developing services that connect Japan with Southeast Asia.
