Tether Massively Expands Its Gold Reserves

Tether has significantly expanded its gold reserves. In just nine months, their value surged from $5.3 billion to $12.9 billion—a clear sign that the company is increasingly relying on gold to support the stability of USDT.

According to the latest report, Tether now holds 116 tons of physical gold. This puts it on par with smaller central banks and shows a noticeable shift in how the firm manages its reserves. The same document states that Tether’s total assets amount to $181.2 billion, with excess reserves reaching $6.8 billion. This sizable financial cushion is meant to reinforce USDT’s stability in today’s uncertain market environment.

Gold has long been seen as a safe haven, so increasing its share in the reserve structure fits with Tether’s strategy of protecting itself from global risks. Analysts estimate that the company bought 26 tons of gold in the last quarter alone—an amount large enough to potentially influence the global gold market.

The firm is also expanding its Tether Gold (XAU₮) token, which is backed by physical metal. By the end of the third quarter, more than 11.6 tons of gold supported the token, attracting users interested in a digital form of a tangible asset. Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, has repeatedly emphasized his belief in the long-term value of both gold and Bitcoin, and the company’s recent actions clearly reflect this philosophy.

The growing gold reserves strengthen the foundation of USDT and may boost user confidence. Still, the question of a full reserve audit remains. Tether says it is in talks with one of the Big Four firms, though no date for such a review has been announced.

Overall, the latest moves suggest that Tether is prioritizing stability and stronger backing for its stablecoin. In an uncertain market landscape, investors will be watching closely to see how this strategy shapes the future of USDT.
