Standard Chartered Expands Institutional Access to USDC

Standard Chartered and Circle have introduced a new service that enables institutional clients to mint and redeem the USDC stablecoin directly through the bank's infrastructure. The first rollout is taking place at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), with plans to expand to additional markets depending on regulatory approval and client demand.

According to Standard Chartered, it is the first global G-SIB bank to offer this type of institutional USDC service. Clients will no longer need to open separate accounts with Circle, as all minting and redemption transactions can now be processed through the bank's platform. The service operates under the same risk management, compliance, and governance standards that apply to traditional banking.

The new offering combines banking services, asset custody, and digital asset capabilities within a single platform. It is designed to support on-chain settlements, corporate liquidity and treasury management, while also paving the way for future payment-related use cases.

Roberto Hoornweg, Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Standard Chartered, said the initiative aims to bring the reliability and standards of traditional finance into the digital asset space, making it easier for institutions to adopt cryptocurrencies within a regulated environment.

The announcement comes as competition in the stablecoin market continues to intensify. Issuers and financial institutions are increasingly competing for a larger role in the distribution and adoption of digital assets.

Just a day earlier, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire argued that USDC remains well positioned despite the emergence of new competitors such as Open USD (OUSD). He highlighted the strength of USDC's partner network and added that the founders of OUSD will continue to play an important role as partners and clients within the USDC ecosystem.
