Senator Lummis Pushes for Regulation
Senator Cynthia Lummis is calling for clear cryptocurrency regulations aimed at keeping companies in the United States and strengthening the country’s position in the global market.
Lummis has urged the U.S. Congress to urgently pass legislation regulating the cryptocurrency sector. In her view, the lack of clear legal frameworks for years has discouraged digital asset companies from operating in the U.S., pushing many of them to move their businesses abroad.
The Wyoming senator, one of the most prominent supporters of cryptocurrencies in the United States, emphasized in a post on X that new regulations should clearly define who oversees the market and under what rules. According to Lummis, well-designed legislation could provide transparent jurisdiction, stronger protections for market participants, and reinforce the United States’ role as a leader in innovation.
The proposed bill, which has bipartisan support, would clearly divide responsibilities between the SEC and the CFTC. A key element of the legislation is establishing a clear distinction between which digital assets qualify as securities and which should be classified as commodities—an issue that has long been a source of uncertainty.
Lummis also announced that cryptocurrency-related issues will remain one of her main legislative priorities through the end of her term in 2027. For years, she has supported the development of the digital asset market and promoted a vision of the U.S. as a global hub for innovation in this field.
Among her initiatives is the Bitcoin ACT, which would allow the U.S. government to purchase up to one million bitcoins, as well as a proposal to exempt cryptocurrency transactions under $300 from capital gains tax.
