Barclays Plans Its Own Blockchain Platform
Barclays considers launching a blockchain platform for payments and tokenized deposits.
British banking giant Barclays is exploring the launch of its own blockchain-based platform. According to Bloomberg, the London-headquartered institution is currently in discussions with potential technology providers who could support the development of a new system for payment settlements and other financial processes.
The initiative aims to integrate decentralized solutions into traditional banking infrastructure. If the project moves forward, Barclays would join other major global players investing heavily in similar technologies, including JPMorgan Chase and HSBC.
Sources cited by Bloomberg suggest that the proposed platform could include the issuance of stablecoins as well as the tokenization of selected assets. Tokenization involves representing traditional bank deposits or other financial instruments as digital tokens recorded on a decentralized ledger, enabling faster and more efficient transactions.
JPMorgan Chase was an early mover in this space, introducing its dollar-backed JPM Coin in 2019, which allowed clients to use tokenized deposits for payments. Meanwhile, HSBC has also recently expanded its blockchain-based payment solutions, giving customers access to tokenized deposit services.
Large financial institutions are increasingly examining the potential of blockchain technology. By leveraging decentralized networks, banks can enhance transparency, reduce reliance on intermediaries, and significantly speed up transaction settlements.
