Russia Launches the Digital Ruble

Russia is set to launch its digital ruble on September 1. The Central Bank has confirmed that the country’s largest financial institutions are ready to support the new payment system.

According to Alla Bakina, Director of the National Payment System Department at the Bank of Russia, all 12 major banks participating in the pilot program have already connected to the digital ruble infrastructure. Work on the project has been underway for several months.

Another nine significant banks are currently completing the integration of their systems. However, one or two institutions may not be fully ready by September. Bakina explained that some of these banks were only recently classified as key market participants based on their 2025 performance and therefore require additional time to adapt their technology.

The new digital currency will operate within Russia’s existing QR payment network. Pavel Potanin of the National Payment Card System (NSPK) stated that the infrastructure is already prepared to process digital ruble transactions.

This is particularly important because the nationwide QR payment network serves more than 9 million retail locations and works with around 200 banks across the country.

Ahead of the September launch, Russian authorities have been actively promoting the project. Roman Artyukhin, Secretary of the Russian Treasury, has urged citizens not to be concerned about the new form of money.

He noted that state infrastructure is already capable of accepting payments in digital rubles and has successfully processed its first transaction worth 35,000 rubles. While modest in value, Artyukhin described the payment as an important milestone in the development of the broader digital ruble ecosystem.

The digital ruble is Russia’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), designed as an alternative to traditional cashless payment methods.
