Strategy Makes Its First Bitcoin Sale Since 2022
Strategy sold 32 BTC for $2.5 million, ending nearly four years without selling any bitcoin.
Strategy has sold a portion of its bitcoin holdings for the first time in nearly four years. The company, led by Michael Saylor, disposed of 32 BTC worth approximately $2.5 million. The transaction took place between May 26 and May 31 at an average price of $77,135 per bitcoin.
Although the sale represents only a tiny fraction of the company’s overall holdings, it has attracted significant attention from the market. Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has long been associated with aggressively accumulating bitcoin and holding it as a long-term investment. Under Saylor’s leadership, the company consistently expanded its reserves during both bull and bear market conditions.
The company currently holds more than 843,000 BTC, meaning the sale of 32 bitcoins has little financial impact on its balance sheet. However, the symbolic significance is much greater. It marks the first bitcoin sale since 2022 and represents a break from the company’s long-standing strategy of continuously accumulating the cryptocurrency.
According to available information, the proceeds from the sale will be used to meet obligations related to the issuance of preferred stock. As a result, the move should not be interpreted as a shift away from Strategy’s long-term commitment to bitcoin.
The market nevertheless reacted negatively to the news. Following the announcement, bitcoin fell toward the $72,000 level and was trading at $71,622 at the time of publication. Meanwhile, shares of Strategy (MSTR) were down more than 5% in pre-market trading.
Several weeks earlier, Michael Saylor acknowledged that the company could sell a portion of its bitcoin holdings if necessary to meet financial obligations. The statement marked a notable change in tone compared to his previous comments, which consistently promoted a long-term buy-and-hold approach to bitcoin.
Despite the sale, Strategy remains the largest corporate holder of bitcoin in the world. Following the transaction, the company’s reserves stand at approximately 843,706 BTC. While the sale appears to have been a one-off decision driven by short-term financial needs, investors will be closely watching future company reports for any signs of a broader shift.
For now, there is no indication that Strategy intends to abandon its bitcoin-focused strategy. However, the sale demonstrates that the company is willing to use a small portion of its reserves when financial circumstances require it.
