Sovcombank Launches Bitcoin-Backed Loans
Sovcombank becomes the first major Russian bank to offer ruble loans secured with bitcoin.
Sovcombank has announced that it will begin accepting bitcoin as collateral for corporate loans. The information was released on February 5, 2026, and applies to financing issued in Russian rubles. The interest rate on such loans is expected to be around 23 percent.
This marks the first public case of a major Russian bank offering loans backed by bitcoin. The decision highlights how digital assets are increasingly entering the country’s domestic financial system.
The program is aimed exclusively at corporate clients. Companies holding bitcoin will be able to pledge it as collateral and obtain funding without having to sell their cryptocurrency. This allows them to maintain exposure to bitcoin while gaining the liquidity needed for day-to-day operations. Potential clients include exporters, mining companies, and businesses already using cryptocurrencies in their operations.
The high interest rate reflects Russia’s current economic conditions as well as bitcoin’s price volatility. While this may limit demand from more conservative firms, the offer could prove attractive to companies with a higher risk tolerance.
Russia continues to face financial pressure due to Western sanctions, and access to traditional sources of capital is often limited. Thanks to its global liquidity and independence from foreign banking systems, bitcoin is increasingly seen as an alternative. Government support for cryptocurrency mining since 2025 has helped build local resources and infrastructure, and Sovcombank’s move aligns with this broader strategy.
Sovcombank’s decision shows that bitcoin is no longer viewed solely as a speculative asset, but is beginning to serve as a form of real financial collateral.
