Ripple Joins the x402 Foundation

Ripple has become a premium member of the x402 Foundation, an organization operating under the Linux Foundation that is focused on developing an open payment standard for AI agents. Other founding members include Coinbase, Circle, and several major companies from the cryptocurrency industry.

The foundation is responsible for overseeing the development of x402, an open protocol originally created by Coinbase. Its goal is to enable seamless payments within standard web interactions, allowing AI agents, applications, and APIs to transfer money as easily as they exchange data today.

The importance of this technology is expected to grow alongside the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence. In the future, AI agents could independently purchase services, access paid APIs, and complete transactions without requiring human intervention.

The x402 Foundation aims to keep the protocol open, vendor-neutral, and independent of any single company. It is designed to work across multiple blockchain networks and support various payment methods.

According to Markus Infanger, Senior Vice President at RippleX, open standards such as x402 lay the foundation for trusted and interoperable machine-to-machine payments.

He also noted that the XRP Ledger infrastructure is already compatible with the x402 protocol, enabling AI agents to settle transactions using both XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin.
