Mastercard Bets on AI-Powered Payments
Mastercard launches AP4M, enabling AI agents and machines to make secure autonomous payments.
Mastercard has introduced Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M), a new payment platform designed to allow AI agents and machines to complete transactions independently.
Imagine an AI assistant that can automatically purchase additional cloud storage, subscribe to the data sources it needs, or pay for services required to complete a task. All of this could happen without redirecting users to payment forms or requiring manual approval for every transaction.
This is the future Mastercard is preparing for. With AP4M, the company aims to create a payment infrastructure that enables AI systems and machines to make payments on their own, securely and efficiently.
According to Mastercard, artificial intelligence will eventually do far more than answer questions or generate content. AI agents are expected to purchase services, manage business processes, and execute transactions on behalf of both individuals and organizations. To support this shift, machines will need a reliable way to settle payments with one another in real time.
The new platform has been built to handle a massive volume of small, automated transactions. These payments could be worth only fractions of a cent and be processed almost instantly, making them suitable for machine-to-machine interactions at scale.
For everyday users, this marks another step toward a future where AI takes over routine digital tasks. Rather than simply recommending solutions, AI assistants may soon be able to purchase the tools and services they need to complete tasks autonomously.
More than 30 technology and financial companies have joined the initiative, including Stripe, Adyen, Coinbase, Checkout.com, Cloudflare, BVNK, Aave Labs, and OKX. Their participation highlights growing industry interest in enabling secure, automated commerce between AI systems and digital services.
