Mastercard Embraces Blockchain Technology
Mastercard will enable stablecoin settlements and expand payment processing beyond banking hours.
Mastercard is expanding its global settlement infrastructure by introducing support for stablecoins. The company announced that it will allow transaction settlements during extended operating windows, including weekends, public holidays, and outside traditional banking hours.
The new solution is designed to provide card issuers and acquiring partners with greater flexibility in liquidity management and transaction settlement. According to Mastercard, the enhanced infrastructure will be particularly useful for cross-border payments, corporate treasury operations, and business disbursements.
Stablecoin-based settlements will be supported through regulated digital assets, including Circle’s USDC, Paxos-issued PYUSD, USDG and USDP, Ripple’s RLUSD, and SoFiUSD. The network will operate across multiple blockchain ecosystems, including Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Base, Arbitrum, XRPL, Canton, and Tempo.
Kash Razzaghi, Chief Business Officer at Circle, noted that businesses increasingly expect financial infrastructure capable of enabling fast and flexible fund transfers regardless of banking hours. Mastercard’s expanded settlement capabilities are intended to address this growing demand.
The first participants in the ecosystem are expected to include ARQ, CBW Bank, Cross River, Lead Bank, and Nuvei. Initial deployments will begin in the United States and Latin America before expanding to additional regions.
Luca Cosentino of Cross River emphasized the rising demand for faster and more transparent settlement processes, highlighting stablecoins as one of the key tools driving this transformation. In his view, Mastercard’s decision demonstrates that blockchain technology can successfully operate alongside traditional payment infrastructure.
Mastercard describes the initiative as the next phase of its broader digital asset strategy. The company aims to provide financial institutions with access to both conventional settlement methods and blockchain-based solutions through a single integrated infrastructure.
In addition, MTS US, a Mastercard subsidiary, has received a BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). The license allows the company to facilitate settlements involving stablecoins and tokenized deposits.
Mastercard is also strengthening its stablecoin payments ecosystem through its planned acquisition of BVNK and strategic partnerships with Circle and Paxos. According to Peter Jonas of Paxos, the future of settlements will be programmable, instant, and global.
