Japan Bets on “Clean” Bitcoin
Japan tests Bitcoin mining as a tool to stabilize its power grid
A pilot project has been launched in Japan where a state-owned energy company is using Bitcoin mining machines to help stabilize the national power grid. The company operates Canaan mining rigs with a total capacity of 4.5 MW, powered entirely by renewable energy.
When electricity demand is low, the machines switch on and consume excess energy that would otherwise go to waste. When the grid needs more power, the devices automatically shut down.
This is the first initiative in Japan where cryptocurrency mining is being used for energy management rather than pure profit. The hardware manufacturer, Canaan, emphasizes that their technology allows mining rigs to act as a “digital buffer,” supporting sustainable grid operations.
Experts note that if the project proves successful, Japan could become a model for other countries. The initiative demonstrates that Bitcoin mining doesn’t have to be a waste of energy — it can actually help balance it.
