New research from Google suggests that the threat posed by quantum computers to Bitcoin may arrive much sooner than previously assumed. According to the report, such a machine could potentially break cryptographic protections and recover a private key in about nine minutes. That’s roughly the time it takes to confirm a single block, meaning an attack could occur before a transaction is finalized.

Until recently, it was widely believed that any real threat was at least a decade away and would mainly affect inactive funds. The latest findings challenge those assumptions. It turns out that the required resources may be significantly lower than earlier estimates, and the necessary technological level may be closer than expected.

Importantly, progress in this field is not happening in a single direction. Multiple teams are working on different approaches, all contributing to faster overall development. In practice, this means that only one successful method is needed for the threat to become real.

The biggest mistake would be to wait until the problem becomes obvious. Updating security in a decentralized network is a complex and time-consuming process. It requires community consensus and the implementation of new, more technically demanding solutions. Even moving funds to newer, more secure addresses could take months.

The authors emphasize that their goal is not to alarm, but to present a realistic view of the situation.
