Europol Strikes at Crypto Mixer

European authorities have carried out a coordinated operation that shut down the popular cryptocurrency-mixing service Cryptomixer.io and seized roughly $29 million worth of Bitcoin. According to law enforcement, the platform had been facilitating online money laundering for years.

The operation was a joint effort involving Europol and law-enforcement agencies from Switzerland and Germany. It took place between November 24 and 28, 2025. During the raids, authorities confiscated three servers located in Switzerland, took the platform’s main domain offline, and secured about 12 terabytes of data. Investigators believe that since 2016, the service may have processed around €1.3 billion in Bitcoin originating from illegal activities.

Cryptomixer.io functioned as a so-called hybrid mixer. It allowed users to deposit funds through a regular website and then blended them with other transactions. Randomized amounts and delayed payouts made it difficult to trace the money, a feature exploited by drug traffickers, fraudsters, and ransomware operators.

Authorities say the 12 terabytes of seized data could help reconstruct financial flows and identify those behind the criminal operations. It is not yet known whether any arrests have been made. Experts caution, however, that even with such a large volume of data, fully rebuilding the transaction chains may be challenging due to the way these services operate.

Investigators describe the shutdown of Cryptomixer.io as a significant blow to online money laundering in Europe. At the same time, specialists warn that criminals adapt quickly, meaning similar enforcement actions will need to continue in order to genuinely curb the scale of the problem.
