The United States on the Brink of a Shutdown
Rising shutdown risk in the US fuels market uncertainty and deepens Bitcoin’s slide.
The federal government of the United States may once again face a shutdown due to political disputes in Congress. Democrats are pushing for changes to policies related to ICE, which has stalled budget negotiations with President Donald Trump’s administration.
On Thursday, the Senate rejected a package of six budget bills that had previously passed the House of Representatives. The vote ended 45–55. The proposal included an extension of funding for the Department of Homeland Security through September 30, but without major reforms. Sixty votes were required for passage. All Democrats voted against the bill, along with seven Republicans who opposed unconditional funding for DHS.
Financial markets are showing growing signs of uncertainty. According to Polymarket data, the probability of a government shutdown currently stands at 50%. This is lower than earlier in the week, when investors were hoping for a last-minute agreement.
The previous US shutdown worsened sentiment across the cryptocurrency market. At present, the Fear and Greed Index remains around 38, indicating fear and concerns about further declines.
Bitcoin has come under strong pressure in recent hours. The price fell below $83,000, losing more than 6% over the past 24 hours. Analyst Aksel Kibar believes the price could move toward a new multi-month low and retest the April 2025 support level around $76,000.
