Solana Criticizes Web3 Gaming
Solana’s CEO says Web3 gaming is fading, while blockchain’s future lies in finance.
Lily Liu, president of the Solana Foundation, has sparked discussion with her views on the future of blockchain-based gaming. In a recent social media post, she stated that the segment of so-called gaming altcoins is unlikely to regain popularity, and that the once-dominant narrative around Web3 gaming is clearly losing momentum.
Her comments came amid reports that Meta may be stepping back from developing the metaverse. According to available information, the company has invested around $80 billion in this area but has failed to reach the expected number of users. Liu noted that similar challenges are also visible in the blockchain gaming industry.
In Liu’s view, the greatest potential of blockchain technology lies not in entertainment, but in finance. She emphasized that play-to-earn games, where tokens play a central role, are often overvalued. In practice, they tend to offer neither compelling gameplay nor long-term stability.
Although billions of dollars have been invested in metaverse and Web3 gaming projects in recent years, many of them struggle to maintain an active user base. Liu’s conclusions suggest that the industry may once again shift its focus toward more practical blockchain applications, such as finance and liquidity.
