SBI Prepares to Launch Yen-Backed Stablecoin

SBI Holdings, one of Ripple's closest partners, could launch a Japanese yen-backed stablecoin as early as this week. The project, called JPYSC, is currently awaiting final regulatory approval before entering the market.

The digital yen initiative is being developed jointly by SBI Holdings and Startale Group. The project was first announced in February, with the companies targeting a launch during the second quarter of 2025. If all approvals are secured as planned, the token will be introduced under the ticker JPYSC.

The new stablecoin will be issued within Japan's trust banking framework in cooperation with Shinsei Trust & Banking. Distribution is expected to be handled by SBI VC Trade, the cryptocurrency arm of the SBI Group.

In recent weeks, the Japanese financial giant has significantly accelerated its stablecoin-related efforts. SBI recently partnered with Fasset, a company specializing in stablecoin-powered remittance services. Fasset's network processes transactions worth up to $32 billion annually, providing a strong foundation for the growth and adoption of the new stablecoin.

JPYSC is being developed in full compliance with Japan's regulations governing digital payment instruments. Beyond everyday payments, the stablecoin is expected to support corporate settlements and asset tokenization. Its infrastructure is also designed to facilitate larger-value transactions, making it particularly attractive for business and institutional use.

The idea of creating a digital yen gained momentum late last year when SBI and Startale entered into an agreement with Ripple. The goal is to bridge traditional finance and blockchain technology while maintaining full compliance with Japanese regulatory standards.

SBI has been actively involved in Ripple and XRP Ledger-related initiatives for years. The group has also invested in companies such as R3 and Securitize. In Japan, SBI works closely with Circle to expand the USDC ecosystem. More recently, the company strengthened its partnership with Chainlink, focusing on asset tokenization, regulated stablecoins, and next-generation financial infrastructure.
