KBC Opens Cryptocurrency Trading

KBC becomes the first Belgian bank to offer retail crypto trading in a regulated environment.

KBC Opens Cryptocurrency Trading

Belgian bank KBC has announced the launch of cryptocurrency trading for individual clients. It is the first banking institution in Belgium to allow private investors to buy and sell cryptocurrencies as part of its own offering.

Starting from the week beginning on February 16, clients will be able to trade Bitcoin via KBC’s investment platform Bolero. The service will operate within a regulated framework compliant with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR). The bank confirmed that it has submitted a complete registration as a crypto-asset service provider, clearing the way for the new product to go live.

KBC emphasizes that the move responds to growing interest in cryptocurrencies among retail customers, while also clearly acknowledging the risks associated with this market. The bank aims to balance innovation with security and transparency.

Initially, the offer will be limited to Bitcoin and Ether. Trading will follow an execution-only model, meaning clients make their own investment decisions and do not receive personalized advice. Before trading, users will be required to pass a knowledge and risk-awareness test covering issues such as price volatility and the possibility of a total loss of invested funds.

Bolero will operate a so-called closed-loop system. Cryptocurrencies can only be bought and sold within the platform, with no transfers to external wallets or exchanges. The bank will also handle asset custody, so clients will not need to manage private keys themselves.

According to data cited by KBC, around 45 percent of Belgians in their early thirties already invest in cryptocurrencies. Bolero itself has a relatively young customer base, with about 60 percent under the age of 40, and Bitcoin ranks among the most frequently searched terms on the platform.

Similar initiatives are being undertaken by other European banks. In Germany, one major institution has already received regulatory approval to launch a cryptocurrency platform for retail clients, accessible directly through banking apps.
