Tether Issues $1 Billion USDT on Tron

On January 9, Tether minted 1 billion USDT on the Tron blockchain. This marked the first major stablecoin issuance of 2026. The move was confirmed by on-chain data as well as by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino. The newly issued tokens did not immediately enter circulation. Instead, they were transferred to Tether’s treasury wallet, where they will serve as liquidity reserves.

The transaction was quickly spotted by blockchain monitoring services. USDT was minted from Tether’s official multisignature wallet and deposited into the Tron treasury. This process represents an “authorized issuance,” meaning the tokens are ready for use but remain in reserve until exchanges or institutional partners request liquidity. In practical terms, Tether is preparing for a rise in demand.

Tron plays a key role in the USDT ecosystem. It is currently the most widely used network for the stablecoin, accounting for over 60% of all USDT in circulation. Users favor Tron due to its low transaction fees and fast confirmation times. The network is widely used for cryptocurrency trading, cross-border payments, remittances, and DeFi applications. In 2025 alone, more than $7 trillion worth of USDT was transferred via Tron.

Large USDT issuances often coincide with periods of increased market activity. The stablecoin is a primary on-ramp for purchasing Bitcoin and altcoins. In previous years, particularly in 2024 and 2025, similar issuances preceded stronger price movements. While this does not guarantee a market rally, it does suggest preparations for higher trading volume.

USDT remains the largest stablecoin on the market. Its total supply exceeds $150 billion, giving it more than a 60% share of the stablecoin sector. It is available on nearly all major exchanges and across multiple blockchain networks. The latest issuance on Tron indicates that Tether expects renewed demand for liquidity in the market.
